Public Works Operator I

POSITION: PUBLIC WORKS OPERATOR I


SUMMARY: 

Reporting to the Director of Public Works this position provides a high standard of customer service. This position assists in the operation and maintenance of all Town amenities. The position assists in the maintenance and fostering of a strong safety program and culture.


HOURS OF WORK:        

This position will include working Monday to Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. Successful applicant may be required to work "on-call" or in emergencies as required.


RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs duties involving the maintenance of roads, storm water management, water distribution, sewage collection systems, garbage collection and recycle operations. Will be required to complete training to participate in staff On-Call rotation.

ADMINISTRATIVE FUNCTIONS

  • Complete all pertinent forms as required.
  • Follow safe work practices and procedures in accordance with OH&S Codes and Regulations.
  • Read and follow all WHMIS material and data sheets.
  • Read and understand task related hazard assessments.
  • Compete site specific hazard assessments when required.
  • Participate in staff/safety meetings or training.
  • Assists other Town Departments when required.
  • Any other duties as requested by the Director of Public Works.

OPERATIONAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assists in the operation and maintenance of the water distribution and sewage collection systems including sewage lift stations.
  • Assists in the operation and maintenance of the storm water collection system and drainage network.
  • Assists in the construction and maintenance of roads, lanes and sidewalks to maintain them in good repair, and cleaning or snow clearing and de-icing as the seasons dictate.
  • Assists in garbage collection and recycle operations.
  • Installs and maintains signs and/or traffic control devices including line or curb painting.
  • Assists in the maintenance, repair or replacement of fire hydrants, as necessary, to meet fire protection needs, also removing accumulated snow to allow immediate access.
  • Operates small equipment, including mowers, light duty and multiple axle trucks.
  • Ensures personal safety and wears appropriate clothing, footwear, goggles, and hard hat when required.
  • Assists other Town Departments when required.
  • Any other duties as requested by the Director of Public Works.


SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and customer service skills with the ability to work in a team environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to work under general supervision & exercise some independence of judgement and action.
  • Ability to deal with emergency situations as they arise.
  • Safety Oriented.


QUALIFICATIONS

FORMAL EDUCATION, TRAINING AND OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION REQUIRED:

  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License.
  • WHMIS Certificate or obtains within 1 year.
  • Obtain Class 3 with Q endorsement within a reasonable amount of time.
  • Start working towards Level I Water or Level I Wastewater according to Alberta Ministry of Environment and Protected Areas standards.


EXPERIENCE

Related experience in a similar work environment is preferred.

 

SALARY

Starting at $26.44 per hour.
