The Importance of Keeping Sidewalks Clear
As a homeowner or business owner, keeping the sidewalks adjacent to your property clear of snow and ice is a vital responsibility that helps ensure the safety and accessibility of our community. Properly maintained sidewalks create a safer environment for pedestrians, reduce the risk of slips and falls, and make it easier for everyone, including children, seniors, and those with mobility challenges, to move safely throughout the neighborhood.
why it's important:
- Safety First: Clear sidewalks help prevent slips and falls, reducing the risk of injuries during winter months.
- Community Accessibility: Keeping pathways clear allows all community members, including those using mobility aids or strollers, to navigate safely.
Legal Responsibility: According to our Community Standards Bylaw, residents and business owners are required to maintain sidewalks in front of their homes and businesses to keep walking surfaces safe and passable. Snow and ice must be cleared within 48 hours of a snowfall.
best practices for winter maintenance:
Shovel snow promptly after each snowfall.
Apply salt or sand to prevent icy surfaces.
Keep a snow shovel, salt, and sand readily available for use.
Assist neighbors who may be unable to clear their sidewalks.
By working together, we can keep Barrhead safe and accessible for everyone this winter season.
