COUNCIL ADOPTS NEUTRAL SPACES BYLAW 08-2024
At the December 16 Special Meeting of Council, the Neutral Spaces Bylaw 08-2024 passed second and third reading, officially coming into effect for the Town of Barrhead. This bylaw ensures that only national flags, the Town of Barrhead flag, and provincial flags will be flown on Town-owned flag poles moving forward.
Here’s what this means for specific flagpole locations on Town property:
- Main Street Mall: No changes – all flags will remain.
- Yuill Park: No changes – all flags will remain.
- Paddle River Golf Course: No changes – all flags will remain.
- Cenotaph: The Red Ensign and Legion flags will be removed.
- Agrena: The Treaty 6 and County of Barrhead flags will be removed.
- RCMP Station: No changes – flag will remain.
- Barrhead Regional Fire Services Building: The County of Barrhead flag will be removed.
Given the sensitivities surrounding the removal of Treaty 6, Legion, and Red Ensign flags, we will consult with representatives of these organizations to determine the most respectful manner to lower them.
Additionally, the decorated crosswalks located downtown on Main Street and near the Barrhead office will have their paint removed once weather conditions permit. Currently, winter temperatures prevent safe and effective removal. We appreciate your patience as we work within reasonable and practicable timelines to complete this process.
