COLLABORATIVE COMMUNITY ACTION LEADS TO DEMOLITION OF PROBLEM PROPERTY

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Collaborative Community Action Leads to Demolition of Problem Property in Barrhead

Barrhead, AB – The Town of Barrhead is pleased to announce the successful demolition of a long-standing problem property following a coordinated effort between local enforcement, community members, and the RCMP. This action marks a major step forward in our ongoing commitment to public safety, neighborhood well-being, and community pride.

The property in question was a source of numerous complaints and concerns over recent years due to repeated drug trafficking activities and bylaw violations. Thanks to persistent community reporting and the dedicated work of the Town’s Community Peace Officer (CPO), the situation was escalated through Alberta’s Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods (SCAN) program.

The SCAN unit, operated by the Alberta Sheriffs, works to shut down properties being used for illegal activity. In this case, surveillance and evidence gathering—supported by our CPO and the Barrhead RCMP detachment—led to the removal of the tenants. The owner decided on demolition as the course of action for property clean up, with structures being fully removed on April 14.

“This is a powerful example of what can be accomplished when the community and enforcement work together,” said Dave McKenzie, Mayor of Barrhead. “We’re thankful for the courage of the neighbours who came forward, the perseverance of our enforcement team, and the collaboration with the RCMP and SCAN unit. This sends a clear message: Barrhead will continue to work at maintaining a safe community.”

The Town of Barrhead remains committed to fostering a safe, vibrant, and connected community. Residents are encouraged to continue reporting suspicious or concerning activity and to take pride in the important role they play in maintaining Barrhead as a safe place to live.
