POSITION: Public Works Labourer - Summer


position summary

Summer employment opportunities exist for two (2) Seasonal Public Works Labourers in the Town of Barrhead. This is a temporary position from May 2025 until August 2025 inclusive. Successful applicants will assist Town crews in maintaining and servicing Town infrastructure, ensuring the safety of the general public, fellow employees, and themselves at all times.


duties and responsibilities

This position performs duties involving the maintenance of roads, storm water management, water distribution, sewage collection systems, garbage collection and recycle operations.

operational duties

  • Providing labour assistance to Public Works employees.
  • Operating tools or equipment as per training.
  • Interacting and providing public assistance in a pleasant and efficient manner.
  • Maintaining Public Works Shop in a clean, safe, and organized manner.
  • Ensuring personal and public safety and wearing appropriate clothing, footwear, goggles, and hard hat when required.
  • Weed whipping, tree trimming, or brushing by roads and lanes.
  • Crack filling, tarring roads, pothole repairs, sidewalk repair/replacement, cleaning gutters and catch basins, clearing/brushing for traffic sign visibility.
  • Shop/yard maintenance (washing, cleaning, painting, carpentry).
  • Assistance during line painting.
  • Building barricades, fencing.
  • Filling in for Public Works staff during holidays (i.e. Sanitation Crew, Recycle, Landfill).
  • other duties as required by the Director of Public Works


skills and attributes

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and customer service skills with the ability to work in a team environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills and interpersonal skills are required.
  • Ability to work under general supervision  and exercise some independence of judgement and action.
  • Safety orientated.


education and experience

  • Possess a valid class 5 drivers license.
  • WHMIS Certificate (training will be provided during orientation)
  • Related experience in a similar work environment is an asset.


reports to

Director of Public Works


hours of work

40hrs/week of shift work. Day shifts including some evening or weekend shifts as required.


salary

$22.80 - $29.46/hour
