POSITION: Parks & Recreation Maintenance - Seasonal 


position summary

Summer employment opportunities exist for four (4) Seasonal Parks and Recreation Maintenance Workers in the Town of Barrhead. This is a temporary position from May 2025 until August 2025 inclusive. Successful applicants must be able to operate, push, and ride on lawn mowers, weed eaters, ½ to 1-ton trucks. Watering flowers, plants, and trees as required along with painting and maintain playground equipment and structures. Some trail and spray pad maintenance can also be expected along with arena, campground, janitorial, and garbage/litter duties as assigned.

This position provides a high standard of customer service and assists in the seasonal operation and maintenance of all town recreation lands and facilities

  • Must be able to complete and maintain records and reports.


general operational duties

Duties and responsibilities of Seasonal Labourers working in the Parks & Recreation Department include, but are not restricted to:

  • Work with a crew and learn new skills.
  • Use existing knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in performing routine maintenance and construction tasks, along with maintaining and constructing grounds, buildings, shrubs, trees, and flower beds.
  • Perform a variety of grounds and maintenance tasks.
  • Carry out oral and written instruction and exercise some independent judgement.
  • Safely operate power and hand tools such as a cultivator, leaf blower, power equipment, power mowers and power saw.
  • Deal courteously with the public.
  • Regularly perform tasks that require physical strength, stamina, and coordination to complete manual work in all weather conditions.
  • Grass cutting, laying sod, raking leaves.
  • Picking up litter.
  • Other duties as required by the Parks and Recreation Foreman.


skills and attributes

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and customer service skills, with the ability to work in a team environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work under general supervision and exercise some independence of judgement and action.
  • General knowledge in operating small power tools and equipment.
  • Experience in landscaping and grounds maintenance are considered assets.


education and experience

  • Possess a valid class 5 Alberta Driver's License.
  • Grade 12 diploma or equivalent.
  • Related experience in parks maintenance, gardening and/or construction work is considered an asset.


reports to

Parks and Recreation Foreman


hours of work

40hrs/week of shift work. Day shifts including some evening or weekend shifts as required.


salary

$22.80 - 29.46 per hour
