URGENT SAFETY ALERT: WATER TREATMENT PLANT ACCESS ROAD AND WALKING TRAIL
no public access
Signage and physical barriers are erected to signify the active hazard zone requiring the public stay out of the area. This is no longer a construction hazard, but with additional recent ground collapse in the area, critical utility infrastructure has been exposed.
Most importantly:
- The area remains closed to all public access, with no exceptions.
- New high-visibility warning signage is being installed to ensure clarity.
- Tampering with, removing, or relocating safety signage, fencing, or gates is a public safety violation.
- Repairs to the access road remain delayed due to mandatory environmental timelines under the federal Fisheries Act, which restricts in-water construction to protect fish habitat during specific seasonal windows. The Town does not control this timeline and is working with regulators to resume work as soon as permitted.
We understand the closure is frustrating, particularly with a popular trail being inaccessible in this area. The risk in this specific area has changed, and continuing to enter it is not a matter of convenience versus access, but that of personal safety and the integrity of critical utility infrastructure.
Access remains open to the Blue Heron Trail elsewhere throughout Barrhead.
