WEATHER NOTIFICATION - POSSIBLE IMPACTS ON WASTEWATER AND STORM WATER SYSTEMS

WEATHER NOTIFICATION

possible impacts on wastewater and stormwater systems

June 26, 2026, 10:33 AM

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a special weather statement for central Alberta, including the Barrhead region, with additional significant rainfall possible Friday evening through Sunday. Following last weekend's rainfall event, which brought 89 mm to the area and prompted a water use restriction, ground conditions remain saturated, increasing the risk of overland flooding, washouts, and pressure on drainage and wastewater systems. That restriction has since been lifted; however, with more rain forecast, the Town is asking residents to remain mindful of water use as outlined below.

The Town of Barrhead will continue to closely monitor critical infrastructure capacity throughout this next system.

be mindful of water use

The Town of Barrhead is asking residents to be mindful of water usage over the coming days. Reducing non-essential water use such as limiting laundry loads, dishwasher use, and outdoor watering during and immediately following rainfall helps reduce strain on the system community-wide and lowers the risk of backups.

This is not a mandatory restriction. It's a proactive request to help manage system capacity while the rain event passes through.

prevent basement flooding

Residents are encouraged to take proactive steps to help reduce the risk of basement flooding and sewer backups:

  • Check sump pumps for proper operation; discharge outside the home, directing water away from the foundation.
  • Ensure downspouts direct water away from building foundations.
  • Move valuables off basement floors if flooding is a concern.
  • Where safe and appropriate, consider measures to help prevent sanitary sewer backup through basement floor drains.

The Town will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as more information becomes available.
