faq

1. What is a property tax audit?

The Alberta Municipal Affairs reviews a sample of properties to confirm that local assessment records are accurate. It's a routine check that helps ensure property taxes are fair and consistent across the province.

2. Why is the auditor driving around town?

The auditor needs to view the outside of certain properties to confirm details such as building size or major exterior changes. They do not enter homes, garages, or backyards.

3. What vehicle should I expect?

A black Ford Edge will be used for this audit. It may drive slowly through neighbourhoods while the auditor records notes and photos of exteriors. We have provided an image of a Ford Edge in the post graphic. Please note that trim and finishes may differ than what is depicted in the image.

4. Will the auditor knock on my door or come inside?

No. This is an exterior-only review. The auditor will stay in their vehicle, or stand on public streets or sidewalks.

5. DO I need to be home?

Not at all. No action is required from property owners or tenants.

6. How long will the audit last?

The review is scheduled for September 23 - 24. Dates may shift slightly if weather or scheduling issues occur.

7. What if I'm concerned about my privacy?

The auditor is working on behalf of the Government of Alberta and follows strict provincial privacy legislation. Only exterior observations and publicly visible details are recorded.

8. Who can I contact with questions?

Call the Town of Barrhead at 780-674-3301 or email town@barrhead.ca We can confirm the audit details and relay any concerns to Municipal Affairs.

9. Do I need to update my own property records?

No. If the auditor notes a discrepancy, the Town's assessor will notify you directly, later - no surprise bills or on-the-spot changes.

10. How does this affect my property taxes?

The audit itself doesn't raise or lower taxes. It simply checks that assessments already on file are accurate. Any changes to an assessment follow the regular review and appeal process.
